We have closed the polling for these races. We will use this information to educate voters on the candidates, and how the TEA party movement here on Maui sees the Candidates regarding, County, State, and Federal elections. Be sure to leave comments below. Thanks
(Note)You may know Schmucker, Shelby above better as Dean
Vote for Lisa Gapero for Council!!!
I did!!
I had the opportunity to talk with Mike White, and he does have his act together. You should meet him and ask the hard questions.
I can wholeheartedly put my support behind John Willoughby and Adrienne King because they have both shown from the very beginning that they embrace what the TEA Party is all about. To them, it’s not about “the Party”…it’s about God, our freedoms, the Constitution, and the will of the PEOPLE they will represent!
As for Lisa Gapero, that’s my gal! I sincerely think she’s far and away the kind of person we so desperately need on our County Council. She’s very sharp, she knows the issues and she won’t be afraid to fight for what she knows is right.
Ray Bashkingy and Jeff Hoylman have spent a considerable amount of time with our group. They are both very solid conservative candidates, and I will not hesitate to support and vote for them.
I could go on about several of the others, but this is already too long! Love this survey / poll!
I voted against the incumbent or retread in a few of these races, like the council seat on lanai. We need new blood!
As far as those that have no TEA in their blood like Neil Abercrombie, I don’t think he has ever seen a tax he didn’t like. Go take a look at his voting record. God save us if he gets elected for anything!
John Willoughby is truly the most 110% conservative candidate in HAWAII! Clearly the most in line with all of our values. Understanding just what it will take to get the job done in DC. Someone that won’t cave to the pressure and corruption in Washington. He understands the Constitution and how to use it to restore this nation. His security clearance and military background will earn him a good committee seat appointment in the House of Representatives.
I wish we could clone him….
Marc Hodges will also be a candidate with “New Blood” that will move Maui County on a path to economic recovery. With plans to streamline County Government bureaucracies that slow it down, costing us money, and wasted time. As the TEA party founder you can be sure he holds our core values & principles.
Arakawa for Maui Mayor because he is a business friendly candidate that is a known quantity in County Government. We do not, at this time, have the luxury of a steep learning curve to get Maui County turned around.
While I will support either Willoughby or Wharton in the state wide general election against Mazie, I do not believe Willoughby will do well in the general election, exactly because he is 110% conservative. This race cannot be won against Mazie without the same coalition put together by Linda Lingle in the last two Governor\’s races. Ramsay Wharton represents that coalition much better and DEFEATING MAZIE overrides all else.
Many of the other races, the incumbents simply need to be term limited out by the voters Nov 2nd.
Lots to think about. Starting with Co.Council, people should know that Gladys Baise sponsored and introduced a bill for Maui to recognize the Hawaii Kingdom and share Maui tax and other revenues with them.
And Bill Medeiros very quietly but firmly got through the bureaucracy to locate a dialysis unit in Hana saving the local folks a 6 hour trip while dealingn with their serious health problems. This is a man for the people!
Mike White is highly qualified for this position as Co. Council. Probably would be an excellent Mayor as well.
Don Couch deserves to win against the compromised Nishiki. He has worked hard for this job and knows the County.
Lisa Gapero would be a good balance of a strong woman who is very familiar with Maui County. She deserves our vote.
On the Westside, Johan/Kiamoku Kapu is the one who led the shutdown of Holloween which devastated local businesses on Front St. He is an angry man.
I’m keenly interested in the race with Eric Seibert, State SD4 Kahului/Wailuku. He will be a strong voice for controlling government spending and helping small business.
Great insights Kay, Just what we are looking for with these polls. Speak your mind, and tell us you thoughts on candidates for or against.
Tim I understand your thoughts, but as a Tea party supporter I fail to see the wisdom in voting for someone especially in the primary that is not the most aligned with our core values and principles. Further I don’t buy into your thinking on the race against Mazie the Marionette rubber stamp for the Pelosi-Frank-Reid agenda. Folks are sick tired of her and “Had Enough?“! Whoever wins in the primary will knock Hirono off. So lets get the best candidate possible. John Willoughby is just what we need in DC, a TEA party dream candidate if there ever was one. If in the end we vote for someone who will not reject any and all legislation that favors special interests groups, and in turn they vote to support some of the social issues of the other side, they will create bigger government. It undermines what the TEA party is trying to accomplish. If we truly intend to use the Constitution as a tool to restore the nation, then we need to understand that if a candidate is weak on social issues you will after all is said and done, be voting against our core values and principles. The unintended consequences of this kind of moderate should be alarming, and very evident to everyone after what we have been put through the last few years.
The same goes for the Mayors race IMO Marc Hodges will be able to make the changes we need in our County Government. I like Alan, and will vote for him if he is the best of the last two standing after the primary, but the fact is he had his chance to do the job. Now we have a chance to get someone elected that holds all of our core values and principles. That’s something we really need to make happen.
Being new to the island what upsets us is that there isn’t a voter booklet that is sent to registered voters disclosing each candidate’s platform and who they are. In Kalifornia each election cycle we got these booklets and it was great. It discloses some details of each individual on which side of the isle they were. Why doesn’t Hawaii provide this to the voters.?
What I do know is what the incumbents have done to the State of Hawaii financially and continue to do to destroy Hawaii. And by all means they get voted out.
What I love about the Maui TEA Party is that it gives us some insight into these candidates and that helps a lot.
Thanks and keep up the great work Brett…!
Jeff
I had to enter with my first name because I wanted to be legal, but I will appear as “Dean” on the ballot. Thanks for voting for me anyway, even though you couldn’t have known who you were voting for!
Ideas I would like to bring to the debate:
1. Eliminate General Excise Tax, replace it with a sales tax. This shifts the burden from business to consumer, and no longer penalizes business for the “privilege” of doing business in Hawaii.
2. Dump the DOE with as much gusto as we dumped tea in Boston Harbor. Get the state OUT of the primary education business, period. Shift the responsibility for our Keiki’s education to local school boards.
Unlike the current majority party, I believe state leaders should LISTEN to the voices of the people, instead of special interests. I am seeking any and all words of advice, wisdom, and council that I can find. What can I do for you?
Very good Dean, But I think most of us knew that it was you. Candidates right now are the talk of the town for us TEA party folks.
Just who the heck voted for Victorino? I guess we have some crazies too!! Oops, was that racial!!!??
Seriously, I would like everyone to get with Randy Piltz, he is former electrical contractor who is retired and you can bet he knows how to run a company and knows this island. he will get people back to work!
I suppose that I am a bit more pragmatic in my approach to the 2nd District Primary race. When I do the math, I’m seeing an incumbent Democrat that has voted with President Obama & Speaker Pelosi 98+% of the time and an electorate that, as of the June 24th Rasmussen poll of likely Hawaii voters, still gave Obama a 72% approval rating, In 2008, both Obama & Mazie collected 71+% of the vote in the general election. It was reported in today’s newspaper that she holds a campaign fund of nearly $700,000 and faces virtually no opposition in the Primary. I cannot speak for either candidate, but those numbers do not translate into “whoever wins the primary will knock Hirono off.”
Even 1st District incumbent Charles Djou considers himself the underdog in the November general election considering the fact that a much more liberal Abecrombie won the district 10 times and Hanabusa will have the full support of Democratic icon Senator Daniel Inouye. I would assume Ms Hirono will have similar support from the Senator.
“The unintended consequences of this kind of moderate should be alarming” yet the re-election of Mazie Hirono is the likely unintended consequence of nominating a candidate that cannot, or will not establish the Lingle-like coalition of Hawaii voters. Both candidates for the 2nd District have signed The Contract from America, which was to be the test of support as of the June Tea Party meeting when social issues were also discussed and rejected as a litmus test by those in attendance.
Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said about willingness to listen to moderate voices, some of which are pro-choice, in policy debates. “The essence of being a Republican is the belief in free markets, the belief in individual responsibility, the belief in the faith of the individual,” he said. “This is what our party is about.” The best thing for the pro-life movement, Cantor spokesman Brad Dayspring told the Huffington Post, would be for Republicans to retake the majority. On September 19th, I want the candidate with the best chance of unseating Mazie Hirono to be the nominee going into November’s general election. A nominee with the core conservative values of Limited Government, Individual Rights & Personal Responsibility
Aloha Tim, Great to have you last night at the class. I agree with you. We do need to elect the candidate best able to knock Hirono off in the Primary, and that candidate needs to be able to carry the TEA party to do that. I don’t buy into what the press has to say about anything. The people have had enough! The poll they ran is funny at best. The key words “likely Voters” I’ll bet not one conservative contributed, OK maybe one. The 28% that feel like the rest of us must have all been Democrats that no longer support Obama. Funny I’ve never been called in one of these polls, has anyone else?
I know some in the TEA party want to cut conservative values in half and just stick to fiscal issues, but as we come to realize and fully understand the US Constitution we will see that these social issues will and have been used to undermine the Constitution, and our TEA party values. How can you truly go to Washington and protect liberty, freedom, and most of all keep Government limited if you favor social legislation that will created bigger bureaucracies, more spending, and special interests that rob our liberty & freedoms? In my opinion the true litmus test is the Constitution if we plan to use it to restore the nation. Therefore where both social and fiscal issues fall or don’t fall within it can not be ignored by candidates or the TEA party. The idea is as the TEA party we stay out of the hot button social issues because under the constitutions original intent our Federal Government has no right or power to legislate them. Not that we just ignore them, and look the other way.
I do think that both candidates can and will be able to build the coalition you speak of. We just need to make sure we put all our possible efforts and resources behind them, and get the word out to Hawaii, “Have you had enough?”
What I would like to see in the 2nd Congressional District race is a debate between Wharton and Willoughby. When I asked Wharton what differnce she could make in DC, her reply was, “I’m not Mazie!” Neither am I nor the other people here.
While I want to support Marc Hodges for mayor, in his speech at our last meeting I had a question for him, he said he’d get back to me on it and then never did. That really disappointed me as it’s typical politician BS! So, I’m still waivering on that. (By the way, the question was how he SPECIFICALLY planned on getting the local economy back on track; everyone wants a better economy, what we need to hear is HOW! This goes for most of the candidates I’ve heard advertise so far…)
Regarding the governor’s race, I’ve only met Duke and he was very friendly but superficial. A friend of mine describes him as an “empty shirt”, someone without substance (don’t know the validity of this statement but I feel it’s important that we hear all the perceptions out there!)
A lady from Keanae was at our last gathering yet I didn’t see her name on the ballot for East Maui. I vaguely remember her name and would recognize it.
I’m not so sure we live in so much a progressive state as an uninformed and apathetic one. Many people here supported the Health Care Deform Act because “health care is good”. They had NO idea what was in it, just heard that they’d be guaranteed health coverage. I even had one lady complain about her co-pay the Monday after it passed; she thought she’d be getting TOTALLY FREE health care!!
We need a forum where all the candidates in the primary can voice their stand on the issues and how they plan to attack them. It’s easy to say one is for or against something; what’s harder is the solution to implementation! How do you plan to do it?
Kai Nishiki is a progressive liberal. She is as far left as you can get!!
She also belongs to Maui Tomorrow. Her platform sounds like Obama speaking.
Marc Hodges was a standout on the AKAKU forum 7/29. He is well informed and seems to be a very honest, dedicated young man. I’d like to see him have a chance to change things for Maui.
Aloha Kay, I agree. I sat out front last night of AKAKU with a crowd of supporters. Marc was the only candidate that got applause from all of the different candidate supporters. It was very interesting because you could see the folks in the crowd relate to what Marc had to say.
I’ve been watching Ramsey Wharton and I like her platform. She seems ready to stop the increase in taxing and government growth. Check out both candidates before you make a decision.
