ALOHA, ALL!
“Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor…that we then may all unite unto him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country… And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions…and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord, to promote the knowledge and practice of the true religion and virtue, and the increase of science.”(George Washington, Thanksgiving Proclamation, 1789)
I’m thinking about the first Thanksgiving and what the Pilgrims faced.…I’m thinking about the parallels with today. When the Pilgrims finally landed at Plymouth Rock after a long voyage, most of their supplies were gone. It was winter, so they couldn’t plant crops for food. Nearly half of those who arrived didn’t make it through that first winter. But with the help of Native Americans, the colony survived and eventually flourished.
We are now facing difficult times in our country. The Constitution is under attack in ways we never would have thought possible just a few short years ago. Our freedoms seem to be slipping away as government grows bigger and bigger. We are at war, the economy is bad, and people are out of work. Yet we have much to be thankful for: family, friends and the good fortune to live in the greatest country on the face of the earth. Just like those first settlers, we will survive and flourish by working together and focusing on what’s right.
We have our freedoms because brave men and women have sacrificed and died defending our country. And while 0bama thinks our military are nice props for a narcissistic photo-op and some in power (Pelosi, Rangel, Murtha, Obey) think they are a good excuse to raise taxes, we know why we enjoy our freedoms. It’s because of our fighting men and women and all they do. Here’s a tribute for the military and their families: Remembering our Soldiers on Thanksgiving
